We are volunteers from all walks of life who are appointed by a judge to speak on behalf of abused and neglected children who are in the court system. CASA is operated on donations and needs all the help it can get. As I painted this piece I was thinking about the things human beings need, food and water, safety, a home with love and respect. So many of us take these things for granted, but for a child in the system these basic needs can seem out of reach, especially love, and we all deserve love. I need A Title

The inspiration for this painting came from the bottle. I saw it at a friends house and just had to paint it. The irridescence is gorgeous. What to put with it and the fact that it is very tall was a challenge compositionally. I had this bottle for a month or more before this idea came to me. Lots of experimenting and finding just the right characters to tell this story and this is it. Now my problem is what to title it. I like the fact that my paper birds are protecting their nest from the painted bird so humm, I give up. Can anyone help?

Art Deco Fountain

This neat fountain is in a building in our downtown. Our doctors offices are in this building. While new facilities are being built out of tin, this beautiful old building stands partly unoccupied. People walk past this marble fountain without a second look. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is everywhere in this building. Maybe it's easier to slap up something new than to restore something old, but how boring we are in our modern aesthetics. This fountain is a work of art and when I set up in the hallway to paint it passersby stopped to take notice of it and they too found the beauty they had overlooked.

After the rush of the past few weeks I am a little weary, so I thought it would be nice to sit down next to my twinkling little Christmas tree and take stock. The shoppping is done, the gifts have been given and now I am seeing past all of that. Happy Birthday Jesus! You came to us on a cold winter night to be our salvation. So much to ask of one tiny baby. It really makes me take pause, no wonder we celebrate. But right now for me it's time for quiet contemplation. Last night I was on the internet when my computer down loaded a nasty virus, well 2 hours later the nice man in Saudi Arabia had fixed the problem. As we said goodnight he wished me a Merry Christmas and I had to wonder if he believed as I do, maybe not, probably not, but he had respect for my beliefs and honored them. It was a small gesture but meant so much. Jesus taught us compassion for those not like us, to help the less fortunate, patience and respect for all. These are the qualities I want to focus on more in my life. I think whether you believe as I do or not, these ideals trancend religion or politics and are just plain good. I will take them with me into the new year. Warm wishes to all!

Martha Berryhill Passes Away At 110

Three years ago I had the honor and privilege to paint a portrait of then 107 year old Creek Indian Martha Berryhill. At the time I was preparing for a solo exhibition here in Okmulgee. The name of the show was "Our Town, Our Land, Our People" it included local landscapes, a doctor, a judge, a state representative, lots of familiar people and places that make this town uniquely ours. Can you imagine everything this woman experienced in her life, the wars, the depression, TV, radio, the births and deaths of those she loved. I was so moved when I met her, I studied the lines on hers face the age in her hands and the soulfulness of her eyes. I went to her home and photographed her outside wearing her traditional dress. While I was taking pictures she began to pray out loud, while I couldn't understand much she was saying I couldn't help but feel like this is one of those moments in life where you never want to forget, and I won't. I donated this portrait to the Creek Council House Museum.

I am excited to announce an upcoming 3 day workshop, March 18,19 & 20, 2010 with the Bartlesville Art Assoc. The workshop is open to beginner to advanced oil painters. We will concentrate on still life with an emphasis on painting flowers. I will be doing demonstrations and individual critiques daily. My new studio friend

Henry

As some of you know we lost our dear Homer a few months ago, he was a great cat and a wonderful friend. He was my studio partner, he kept me company everyday while I painted. When he thought it was break time he would claw the back of my legs until I turned around and he would sit on his hind legs with his paws up so I could pick him up for some petting. He had a great personality, we were so lucky to have him and he is missed. When you work alone having companionship is really important. Well this is Henry, he is a shelter kitty and we welcomed him with open hearts. His personality is still developing but he is definatly a cool cat. He likes to hang in the studio, and only likes running water from the sink. I've been busy painting everyday and will post some new pics soon.

I went out to paint a landscape and painted a still life. The light on this bunny and the brilliant red of the cockscomb was too good to pass up. It's finally cool enough to paint out in Oklahoma. We have had an extra long and hot summer here. The OPA paintout is next weekend, Oct. 16 in Sapulpa at Pretty Water Lake. You don't have to be an OPA member to come and meet new painters.

These are not your normal Dandelion puffs. These grow at least five times the size. The first time I tried to pick them they flew into pieces on the wind. I went home and got the Aquanet hairspray and gave them a good spray just so I could cut them. These are one of my favorite things to paint and draw, at least once a year they find their way into a setup. They have form like a solid yet they are not solid, I also think that these evoke memories for a lot of people of childhood and making wishes on them.

"Special Things" 6"x8" Oil

I was in the middle of setting up a still life when I realized how I reach for certain objects that I have painted hundreds of times before, for example, Christmas ornaments, ribbons, a couple favorite old vases, pansies, and clementines to name a few. It's not that I don't have enough stuff to choose from, my favorite hobby is looking for more stuff. I think it's that I'm naturally drawn to these objects, and what they can do in a set up. I wonder if this is a crutch or just my style and the thing that makes my work recognizable? I wonder if any of you do this also and what do you use over and over?

This orchid was the last demo I did at my workshop as our time was running out. I wanted to show how you can carve out the negative space around an object with paint to to get an accurate drawing. I thought everyone did a great job. I forgot to bring my camera to take class pics to show you, I will not forget next time. Thanks to everyone who was patient with me as I got past my nerves. I will be giving another workshop in Bartlesville, OK in January, this will be a 3 day class and doing a demo in September for the Edmond Art Association. Happy painting!

A Good Idea

This idea came from one of my favorite landscape painters Marc Hanson, it's so good I thought I'd share it. Marc did a painting a day last April and needed a place to store them while they dry.

I thought that you might be wondering what one does with all of the paintings. When I started thinking about doing this in late March of 2009, I thought about what I would do with all of those panels once they had wet paint on them and needed somewhere to dry and stay safe (from the cat... Sargent). I went to a the music store and measured the DVD wire racks. The tallest one holds 50, the shorter two hold 32 or so. They work out perfectly and would even work for 6x8's if you put them in there the narrow way. There are about 95 paintings in this photo.

I haven't forgot about you, we have had soooo much computer trouble. We think it's fixed and then it's not, meanwhile life goes on in cyber world without me. I had no idea how dependent I am on the computer. I would run down to the library to check my mail daily. So hopefully we are done with repairs. This painting was done while I was at The Waterstreet Gallery last week. It was fun to do. I didn't want any definate lines around the bulb, just mass against mass with some places that just melded into the background.

Demo form Water Street Gallery

I had fun doing this demo, it is not a finished painting but I think the idea is there.I was nervous, performance anxiety you know. There was a good turn out and a few signed up for my 2 day workshop. The date is June 26 & 27, it's a weekend for those of you who work. It will be held at The Water Street Art Gallery, 16 Water Street, Sapulpa, OK, from 9-4. The focus will be on still life in a smaller format. Painting smaller and quickly is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills. I will provide handouts and info on blogging and selling on ebay among others. We will study composition, drawing, color, and harmony. I will demo and there will be individual and group critiques. The class is limited to eight and the cost is $160. How is everyone today? I just got back from San Antonio yesterday, Spring is in full gear down there. My aunt, Sr. Bridget, yes she is a nun, is 91, and lives there. Sr. Bridget has been one of the most influential people in my life. She left Ireland at age 15 to become a nun, she is kind, sharp witted, has a great sense of humor and is the wisest person I know. We had a lovely visit. I visited the Greenhouse Gallery while I was there, wow, What a great gallery! 12,000 square feet with some of my favorite artists, Walt Gonske, Sherrie McGraw, David Leffel and Daniel Keys. Daniel is a young artist with huge talent, he is a still life artist and is in this months Art of the West magazine. The gallery is getting ready for the Salon International Show next week, over 300 paintings were juried in.

Out of the Box Promotion

I saw this video on Fine art Views and thought it was a unique idea for self promotion. Perry has combined his art with his life and set it to an appropriate tune. By the time we're done watching we feel as if we know Perry, and he seems like a real likable fellow. This kind of connection is so important in creating lasting collectors. He has thought outside the box and has created a successful marketing tool. I wonder how difficult it would be to do something like this ourselves? Study in Pink and Green Oil

I remember when I was in art school many moons ago, all of us baby artists struggling with the idea of what it meant to be an artist. High morals and righteous attitudes were in no shortage, "art for art sake" was the mantra. The thought of selling our art for money was looked down on. Our art was an expression of ourselves, part of us, selling a painting would be like selling our children. "We're not in it for the money" we would say. Money was looked down on, true artists didn't care about cash, trust fund kids would dress the worst, grow dreadlocks and hide the fact of who they were. Easy to do and say when mom and dad are footing the bill. But in the real world there are bills to pay and would you rather sell your art or wait tables? I always looked at it from a different perspective, I felt that finding the one person who connected with my painting and wanted it in their life was the natural end of the creative process. It is an honor for someone to love a painting enough to dedicate a place in their home for it, and to compensate me for that is a privilege. So for that privilege , my obligation is to produce the highest quality most beautiful painting I can, and to help that painting find it's owner. I think a lot of artists find that selling their art and themselves to be no fun. It can't all be fun and games, when we wear all the hats in our own business there are going to be some things we need to do that aren't always fun. With the introduction of the internet it has become so much easier to reach our people, and you know, collectors like to meet artists, it furthers the connection to the art. Besides, who knows more about your art than you. I think we should embrace our customers and want to know them, after all they are buying our children.

Hello Everybody, sorry for not posting recently. I have been working on some nudes and it occurred to me that this subject matter may be objectionable to some of my viewers, so I haven't written. What's your opinion on this? Hey, I am going to give a two day workshop toward the end of June, hopefully a Saturday, Sunday at the Water Street Art Gallery in Sapulpa, OK. It will focus on still life in oil, and I've got some fun ideas for us. "A Day of Art, Friends and Fun"

I had so much fun last Saturday in my studio. A group of 8 painters and one model joined together for a day of painting and drawing the human form. Our lovely model was brave, as temperatures hovered around 18 degrees and snow flurries flew, she held her poses and didn't complain, even when one of us just had to go outside and let an icy breeze sweep in. We worked from 10am until 4pm. and I was tired by the end but exhilarated as well. It is a privilege to be in the company of like-minded friends striving toward the same goals. What hard work, so many decisions to be made, so many measurements to be taken. I hope we can do this again soon. Below is the start of a painting I did today based on the studies from Saturday. I'll keep you posted with the progress.

100 Stroke challenge

I set a challenge for myself today, paint a portrait in 100 strokes. Why would I want to do this? Well, I admit I heard someone recently talking about this and I got really excited by it. To say as much as possible in as few strokes as possible. I think this is the goal of most painters. After doing this I realized many things. #1, most of my portraits have a whole lot more than 100 strokes, and #2 in order to be economical, I needed to connect shapes in one stroke. To do this, a lot of paint needed to be loaded on my brush so I would be able to complete the stroke. I created some neat effects by not totally mixing my paint on the palette and having different colors show up by twisting the brush on the surface, especially in the hair. Also, you would think that it would be pretty quick just painting 100 strokes, but no, every stroke had to count, every stroke needed to be thought out carefully and placed precisely. 3 hours and I have to admit it took me 112 strokes. Yeah, I cheated, I couldn't help myself. I was having some chin issues. No, It's not ready for the framer, this was just an exercise, I was being a student today. It's not the best thing I've ever done, but I am not embarrassed to show you my experiment. Take this challenge yourself, it doesn't need to be a portrait, try a landscape or stll life, be a student, and let me know how you did.

Their little Faces, I Could Take Them All Home

Oh the Pansies are here, in Oklahoma they last through the winter so the nurseries are full. So many varieties I wanted them all. As far as models they are the best, they last and last even out of water for a while without drooping. If they do droop, pop them back in water and they are good as new. Maybe I should rate the best and worst flowers for still life painters based on how well they cooperate. I know I have watched Tulips go from closed bud to wide open and pointing in another direction in a couple of hours. Anyhow, I painted this 6"x8" as soon as I got home, what fun.

Why Buy Art?

For many of us buying art can be an intimidating process. Galleries have gotten a bad reputation as being run by snobs, and yes maybe justly so. But I can assure you for the most part those days are gone. Gallery owners have come a long way in making attitude adjustments to staff and are much more gracious. I believe buying art is about making connections. Many of us buy art for nostalgic reasons. The picture takes us back in time or reminds us of experiences we have lived. It makes a connection to our lives.
So where do you begin? Explore the local art scene, the more you look the more you’ll learn. Buying art is one of the most subjective things you will do. You alone know what motivation is strongest in you and you are the one who will make the connection to the art. Artists are usually happy to get to know their buyers, don’t be afraid to speak with them about their work. It gets lonely in the studio; a phone call is always welcome.
The Bottom line is that whether we buy art to mirror our lives, to express our identity or to decorate our homes, most of us buy art because we like art. So when deciding who or what to buy, my response has always been, “buy what you like.”

Gilcrease Miniature Show, Opening Night

Well, a good time was had by all. Gilcrease knows how to throw a party, the food was good the spirits plentiful, and paintings were bought by many. So is the recession over? Who knows, maybe we are all just tired of being told how bad things are and feeling it in our retirement accounts. Sometimes you just have to say to hell with it and go buy something. A little buyers rush is a good thing. Especially when you've tried to be good for a long time, or maybe not such a long time, hmm. Last night my artists friends did pretty well and I am happy in their successes, now they can go shopping too.

Hello everyone, I just got back from taking my youngest son (11) trick or treating. I fear this will be his last year. Our state park hosted Halloween, people set up their campers and decorated them with every scary thing you can imagine, it was an all day event with music, bingo and hay rides. My oldest was scaring people silly as a zombie on the spook trail. They are growing up too fast. Anyway, hey, good news, I am now a part of a new gallery in Sapulpa, OK. called the Waterstreet Art Gallery. I have a link posted so you can check it out. For a long time now I have wanted to do more figurative work, I used to drive to Tulsa on Thursday evening's to attend life drawing. I loved it, but it's at night 45 miles away and ok, I did it for years, but boy, it gets tough. So I hired a model to come to me. I may be a little tentative in this piece but I am pleased with it. What do you think? I welcome your coments.

I have no idea if the spelling is right, and maybe I should have chosen a different title but, I like it so I'll keep it. This is one of two painting going to Howard/Mandville Gallery in Kirkland Washington. I was invited to participate after the Oil Painters of America show was held there. They liked my "presents" and thought they would fit in well with their holiday small works show. I'll post the other one in my next post. Painting these presents has become addictive, I look for paper everywhere. I've even had gift stores wrap some empty boxes for me because they do such a beautiful job. I have found a website called www.agiftwrappedlife.com that sells the most beautiful gift wrapping sets as well as gifts perfect for any woman. While you are there check out their blog, it gives tips on how to wrap, what's hot and lots of great ideas.

8 Routines To build Your Art Business

As a wife and mother of two sons and a full time artist my life is full indeed. I do have the luxury of working from my home and I consider myself a small business with one employee, me. That means I wear lots of hats. The artist in me wants to be in the studio always, but the practical side of me knows that there is so much more to do than just paint. Being organised is not a bad thing, most successful artists I know are savvy business people and having routines actually frees the mind to be able to be more creative.
1. Set a schedule with regular studio and office hours.
2.Start your week out right, I usually go to my studio for a little while every Sunday to straighten up, declutter, and think about what I will begin on in the morning.
3.The "To Do List" also on Sunday. Ex. order supplies, photograph art, calls to make. I get great satisfaction crossing them off, knowing I am advancing my business. I keep my list in a notebook and what I don't get done on last weeks list moves on to this weeks list.
4.Clean up at day's end. Walk into your studio ready to paint. What a drag to have to clean dry brushes and paint when you want to start painting.
5.Don't forget marketing! Write a newsletter,update mailing lists, post to your blog.
6. research galleries, artists, shows of interest, and magazines. Keep current.
7. Keep a file cabinet. Soooo helpful. I have files for forms, ex. inventory and model release, receipts, sales info, newsletter ideas, files of paintings location, etc.
8. Review your goals and see what steps you need to take to further them along and write them on your list.
There is so much to think about and rember, but having a set routine can keep us on track and focused for success.

It couldn't have been a more perfect day to meet new people who share a common interest, painting and the outdoors. This weekend I hosted the Oil Painters of America's paint out in Oklahoma. OPA is holding paint outs in all states across America and I am proud of the group the group that turned out. I crossed my fingers and said a prayer that it wouldn't be pouring rain, well as you can see from the pictures it was splendid. Ideas and addresses were exchanged as well as a few laughs. The Waterstreet Art Gallery in town hosted a reception for us at the end of the day and we got to look at every ones work. The Sapulpa Arts Council also provided gift bags in the morning complete with bottled water and a candy bar. You know you have to stay hydrated and keep your blood sugar up when your painting out. This was the first year for this painting event and I hope for it to continue and grow. As artists we lead isolated lives, in the studio or on mountain tops honing our skills and trying to answer our own questions, it's events like this that bring us all together to exchange ideas and answer some of those questions. Thanks to everyone who came out and the gals from the gallery and arts council for their support.

Triplets?

Mineral Springs Falls, Highland Mills, N.Y.

This was one of my favorite places to hang out when I was a kid. My own kids were wowed by it. I was happy to have them experience this place. You have to walk a trail for about ten minutes to get to it. All I told my boys was that they would hear and feel it before they saw it. Because the falls are spring fed it is soooo cold, the air temperature drops as you get closer to it. Our feet were numb after standing in the water for about 30 seconds. What I love about the Hudson Valley region is that these kinds of places are everywhere. There was a whole art movement based on the landscape of this area. Maybe some day I will be able to paint here, I hope so.What kind of makes me sad is all the development taking place obscuring panoramic views.

The wildlife are at odds with the encroachment into their territory. We went to visit my sister in Pennsylvania, she had mentioned the Deer and how they were like pets, not fearful of people. Well seeing is believing. A doe appeared from the woods to visit one of the neighbors and a little while later she was back with these three fawns, too cute. We didn't know if she was the mother of all three or maybe a surrogate mom to one of them, so many deer are killed daily by cars. We didn't know if Deer could have triplets. Does anyone know?

Legendary Pearl Paint, NYC

My family lives about 50 miles outside of New York City, great for a day trip into the city. Pearl Paint is a legendary art supply store more than 70 years old. As an art student I spent countless hours wondering the 6 floors, It is so big that a store map is offered when you enter. Pearl opened in 1933 the same year Albert Einstein came to America, the Golden Gate bridge began construction and the Great Plains were devastated by the Dust Bowl.

Pearl Paint is located on Canal Street, probably one of the busiest streets in NYC. If you need a handbag or a scarf this is the place. We had to be careful not to lose each other as we pushed through the crowds. We walked through Chinatown amazed by the sidewalk fare. Fruits and vegetables never seen before, Ducks hanging in shop windows and if you are a still life painter there were fabulous stores full of Asian teapots, bowls, beautiful hand made papers, oh I could go on. My problem however was carrying all this stuff since we did not drive, but took the bus. There is something to be said for having a car.

I was trying to keep things very simple in this study, just how little detail is needed for us to complete the picture? I think this is something artist's struggle with everyday, the term, to paint "loose" is used quite often in the art world. As young painters we see every detail and want to put it all down on the canvas. I think there is a poetry about the impression of a painting, leave the viewer to complete the picture, if it's all about the detail and the facts, it's sort of like reading the newspaper, all the info is there and nothing is left to the imagination, by the way, the paper is only around for a day. Now poetry on the other hand is read over and over again allowing the reader to feel emotion and bring their own interpretation to the piece. There is a reason the Impressionist movement is the most popular of all. So I will try to continue to keep my strokes to a minimum, sounds easy doesn't it?
I am posting something I painted a couple of weeks ago because I had eye surgery last week, my husband calls it a front end alignment, actually the Doctor corrected a lazy eye that was causing headaches for some time now. It involved cutting the muscles on each side of the eye and aligning the eye properly. I was so sick from the anesthesia and pain medication, ugh, I was in bed for 3 days. I am a big wimp I guess. It's been 10 days since the surgery and it is healing quite slowly so I have just been piddling around in the studio. It hasn't been this neat in ages. We are leaving for New York in a couple of days to visit my family, the boys are excited as am I.

Oil Painters of America Western Regional

"Anticipation" Oil 16"x20"

I just received word that this painting was accepted into the Oil Painters of America Western Regional Show. It is being held in Kirkland Washington at the Howard/Mandville Gallery. I wasn't expecting to notification until July 22 because that is the date printed in the prospectus for the show. That is a misprint, it should have been June 22. I was contacted by Art Collector Magazine, they want to include my painting in an editorial article about the show in the August edition. I will also run a quarter page ad featuring another painting. I contacted my gallery, Rive Gauche in Scottsdale and they will be running a full page ad inside the front cover (prime real estate). All of this happened so fast my head was spinning, they all needed images of the artwork, quotes and layouts and approvals. I loved every minute of it. This is the first time I have spent money to run an ad in any publication so it will be interesting to see what happens. I am told that you really have to put your name in front of people in consecutive ads to have any effect, I don't know that I will be able to do that, as advertising is pretty costly, but this is a start.

I thought my post show would only last a couple of weeks, that's how long I had it scheduled, ha! I guess the saying "it takes as long as it takes" is true for me. I had made plans about new ideas and projects I wanted to start on as soon as the show was over, and I made a bunch of starts and stops, but nothing seemed to gel. I came to realize I just needed time to play, to be a student and to try different ideas. I didn't need to turn out a "product" every time I put brush to canvas, that's a lot of pressure and I had just been under a lot of that, (the good kind of course.) So I did lots of small paintings, experimenting with lighting, subjects and color. I also went outside this spring and painted plein air. What a joy it is to be privileged enough to do what you love to do everyday. My battery is now fully charged and I am working on some bigger pieces again. This painting was done from a plein air study with photo back up. I have to say though, the photos were so different from what I saw that day, I really used them for drawing and detail.

The Honeymoon's Over

I knew it would happen, and it has, what do I do now? I have worked on the exhibit for 18 months and now all the anticipation and planning are over, (sort of like planning a wedding). Even though I knew it would happen I thought I could head it off, wrong, I am feeling a bit lost. I wonder around my now empty studio feeling like an emptynester, my babies are gone, where to begin now. I have a few ideas rattling around in my head but nothing is jelling yet. I would like to do some large landscapes and also some nudes, although finding models could be a problem in my small town. It will come in time I hope. On a sad note, the Talisman Gallery in Bartlesville, OK will be closing its doors after 40 plus years in business. It was my first gallery and it has been a great experience. For those of you who don't know The Talisman, it is owned and operated by Jody Kirberger a larger than life personality whose generosity is unmatched. Many of todays great artists got their start here in Oklahoma with Jodi. Richard Schmid, Scott Burdick, Nancy Guzik, Dan Gerhartz just to name a few. The gallery has been a landmark in Bartlesville and it will be dearly missed by artists as well as patrons. Thanks Jodi for 10 great years!

The opening reception for my solo exhibit was yesterday. I dreamed of what it would be like for a year and a half. It was more than I imagined, the people of my community came out in style. The response was overwhelming, I was so moved by everyones kindness and support. I met so many new people, not that I can remember their names, (nerves), and all of my artist friends were there to cheer me on. The crowd was big and they kept coming, I guess everyone likes a party, and that's what it felt like, good friends, good food, and art that we could all relate to. Well today I am exhausted, I don't think I realized how much stress I was under because I loved every part of it, it didn't seem stressful. I am not in the studio today, my house is calling for attention, it has been ignored for too long. I figured if the boys had clean cloths and hot meals the rest could wait for a while, and they did their part in picking up the slack around here. Besides I think I have empty nest syndrome, my studio is empty, I liked being surrounded by all the paintings and frames for so long it seems a bit hollow up there.

For the past 18 months I have been working on my first solo exhibition. It opens this Sunday here in my town of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, it's called "Our Town, Our Land, Our People." I spent years seeking representaion for my work in far away places that I never even visited, entered shows out of state, and that's fine but I think I underestimated my home state of Oklahoma. I was not born in Oklahoma, but I am proud to call Oklahoma home. As I was celebrating 16 years of living in Okmulgee; Oklahoma was celebrating its' first one hundred years of statehood. I was struck by the pride and unifying spirit of our people. What I have come to love about Okmulgee is the kindness and hospitality of our people, the subtle beauty of our land and how the people are directly connected to it. The muted colors of Autumn, the ice covered trees of Winter, the bright green fields of Winter Wheat, and the cool blues of our lake in Summer have all come to inspire in me a need to capture in paint this time and this place. Our town is rich in history, every building has a story to tell. My story is about Okmulgee, Oklahoma, a small town with pride, and a sensibility that anyone who lives in a small town can identify with. The response and support for this show has been wonderful and I am so grateful to everyone who has worked and volunteered to help me with this exhibit, and I want to thank them all. I guess the moral to the story is while you dream of success in far away places, don't forget that the people who are rooting for you success are right here at home.

I started blogging about a year ago. I was doing daily paintings, it is very popular nowdays and I wanted to be current. I have to say these are a great exercise to rapidly improve your skills, and I saw a big improvement in my work. It was an investment in me. I was trying to gain representation on one of the daily painting sites that are out there. What I realized is, is that's about all I was able to get done in a day. No, they don't take that long to do, but by the time I figured out what I was going to paint, set up lght it and paint, a couple of hours have past., and for me I had a hard time changing gears and getting focused with the kind of intensity that I need for my larger work. It ultimatly was not for me. I of course will continue at least once a week to be a student and do some quick more spontaneous daily work, but I am changing the focus of my blog. As I mentioned in my last post in September, I had a friend who used to say we have to paint with raw abandon, something that does not come in a tube and you can't buy. I love what I do and I am so passionate about my life as an artist. It's not an easy road, the highs are high and the lows (oh my gosh) you know. So I think I'll just keep it current, post when I have something to say and hope you enjoy.

I feel like I have learned so much since I started doing these daily paintings. I have painted for a long time, 24 years, but by compressing all the steps of picture making into one hour, give or take, it forces you to problem solve, deal with new composition, and color theory everyday. It's like doing your scales in music, it keeps you mentally and physically sharp. No pun intended.

I picked these up at the farmers market, they were irresistable. They served double duty last night, after I painted them I cooked them with dinner. My boys gobbled them up. I swear they did! How you ask, well I sliced them thin, threw them in my cast iron skillet with some butter, yes butter, evoo would be healthier, season salt and pepper. I cooked untill just tender, topped with parmasan cheese and popped the skillet under the broiler untill cheese is golden brown. Good stuff and good for you.

My 10 year old was in the studio today , so I asked him if he wanted to paint. He of course said yes, what kid dosen't want to paint. I did this apple as a demo, and then he dove in, lots of questions and an hour later he was done. It was a special afternoon for me to be able to teach my child a little about how to see light and shadow, to think like an artist.

I had more time today since most of the scene is in shadow. The first thing I did was establish the light on the ground and tent because that would be the first thing to change. A man camped next to us asked me how I know when to stop painting, there are lots of different answers to that when I think about it. The light is completly changed, it looks like I want, it's hopless, , too cold, too hot, in this case everyone wanted to know where dinner was.

The second day of the workshop we drove an hour west to the Witchita mountains, how pretty, they were covered with yellow flowers. I could have painted here for a week. We arrived at a river with boulders and bright sun. Painting plein air is hard work, carrying all the equipment, you really have to scale back on what is absolutley nesessary. Ask me how I know. Ugh!

The first day of the workshop we were at a beautiful B and B. Gay did a demo, wow. There were small cottages behind the main house. I painted Rose Cottage. I had to stand in the sun so my umbrella came in handy. Did you know you can still get a sunburn under an umbrella? I think I will spray paint the inside of the umbrella black to help with this problem.
